Then & Now

West 242nd Street & Broadway looking south

This early 1900’s postcard reveals the popularity of the Van Cortlandt Park recreation area. The terminus of the Broadway line close to the border of Yonkers attracted crowds of picnickers, nature lovers and sports-minded city folk who relished the open green spaces of the park (left) and the restaurants and amusement rides. Today, the same subway brings new generations who use the Van Cortlandt spaces for soccer, cricket, football and tract events among others.
