Are you a phillumenist? You are if you collect matchbooks!
ON SALE FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY: “Back In THE BRONX” is currently selling a brand-new, never-before-seen Matchbook Poster. The image itself is on 13″x13″ glossy thick paper-stock and depicts dozens of matchbook covers from your favorite bars, restaurants, and clubs from the olden days in The Bronx. Interspersed among the matchbooks are images of the locations they represent. This is truly one-of-a-kind!
Collecting matchbox labels emerged along with matches. Manufacturing of matchbooks peaked during the 1940s and 1950s, then steadily declined because of the availability of disposable lighters and various anti-smoking health campaigns. Recently, matchbooks have begun to regain some of their popularity as a “retro” advertising item, particularly in high-end restaurants, and the idea of the phillumenist returned. The hobby became especially widespread from the 1960s through the 1980s.
The Bronx, like the other New York City boroughs, had its share of matchbooks. Back In THE BRONX has collected dozens of these and compiled them into the unique image you see here, arranged in categories such as Restaurants & Cafeterias (161st St. & 167th St. Cafeterias), Bars (Murphy’s Bar & Grill), Service Stations (Fordham Service Station), Taxis (Adair Private Taxi), Bowling Alleys (Playdrome, All Star Lanes, Bruckner Lanes), Catering Halls (Mayer’s, Gun Hill Manor), Wines & Liquors (Farms Wine & Liquor), Hotels & Motels (Bronx Motel), Automobile Dealers (Brawley Oldsmobile), Cleaners (Spotless), Pharmacies (Thomas’ Pharmacy), Pizzerias (Allegro Pizzeria), Bronx Attractions (Bronx Zoo), Television Repair (Bronx Television Service), and more!
The picture is a keepsake and a showpiece to be displayed, either framed or un-framed, anywhere in your home; be it on the wall, mantle, or coffee table.
Don’t miss a chance to own this beautiful picture, or buy one as a gift for a fellow phillumenist Bronxite!
